Although most people wish to live long lives, attempting to significantly extend the average human life span would be a mistake. If achieved, this would place an enormous burden on resources, lowering the quality of life for everyone.
The speaker claims that if people live long lives, society would suffer from a huge burden on resources, lowering the quality of life for everyone. To some extend, the assertion seems reasonable since the more people share sources, the fewer sources everyone would gain. However, the speaker fails to consider that people living long lives could create not only more substantial materials but also valuable spirit materials, which will promote society progress.
People who live long lives could extend their working span and then create substantial material and spirit material for the whole society. Nowadays, many people, more than sixty, still work for industries, universities and organization. And some of them occupy the essential positions because of their valuable experience, profound knowledge and dept skills. For example, older leaders could help industries get out of financial trouble because of their valuable experience; older professors could explain difficulties clearly and vividly because of their profound knowledge; older car repairers could figure out car problems at first glance and fix it up quickly because of their dept skills. And people usually gain experience, knowledge and skills by long time practice. Thus, the longer people live, the more resources people could create.
Especially famous people, such as Adison and Linkon, if they could extend their live span, they will make uncountable contribution for the society. If they were live long lives, they would have more time to fulfill their ideal and promote the progress of the society. Adison may invent more electronic machine which will help people get out of the burdens of heavy jobs and Linkon may promote the civil activity and diminish the discriminate of racial. In this sense, attempting to significantly extend the average human life span is meaningful for the society.
Admittedly, society needs to provide more resources for people if they live longer lives. It is common sense that people need to consume food, water and etc to survive and someone may argue that these people occupy sources for younger people. However, resources which older people create always exceed the recourses they consume, since older people usually consume less but create more valuable substantial and spirit materials.
In conclusion, attempting to significantly extend the human life is not definitely a mistake. It would bring out more precious substantial and spirit materials though more people will occupy more sources. And especially for the famous people, their impact and contribution would grow with time. |
