Hi James,

I saw your response in a separate thread, but I guess it was meant to address my question about CBS.

What are the CBS great resources that the school is proud to offer to its students? Any particular courses and professors? I know there are lots of those obvious ones (close to Wall Street and guest speakers, etc), but are there any understated ones? What about courses/competitions/professors/research efforts that are dedicated to finance in emerging markets?

Thanks for your advice on this! Much appreciated!

Good Question, For CBS's Question #1 it is important to mention your past experiences as you talk about your career goals. You need to talk about your achievements to convince adcom that your goals are in line with your background and strength.  Every successful Columbia application tells a story, one that draws a coherent line between your undergrad years, your work experience, your professional aspirations, and your personal life, ending with a pitch to as to why you're a fit with CBS, what you will add, and why you need an MBA now in your career.  My advice on Essay #1 is that you should spend at least 150-250 words talking about your current career and about the skills that you will need from an MBA program.  This will give the adcom background and context for your application. I am from CBS class of 2010, you can ask  your questions on the curriculum here and i am happy to answer any questions that you may have for CBS.

Hope this helps!

It's very good to hear that so many candidates are considering CBS! It's a great school in a great location and provides a number of resources for MBA students.  In answer to your question, let me tell you about some of the programs and resources at CBS that I think are particularly valuable:

The Value Investing Program - For finance focused candidates, this is one of the best programs at Columbia or any other top business school.  As many of you know, Warren Buffett is a CBS alum and one of the most famous and successful value investors in the world.  This program teaches the basic investment theory behind his success and gives you the tools to identify undervalued businesses for long-term equity appreciation.  rofessor Bruce Greenwald is the head of the program and you have to apply internally after your completing your first year to be accepted.

The Chazen Institute - Chazen organizes all student travel tours and is a resource available to both US and international students.  Among the many study tours taught under Chazen, there is a seminar that includes a trip to Shanghai and is taught by Prof Shang-Jin Wei.  There are also seminars that take you to Africa and Latin America and student trips that travel to many locations in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America.

In terms of classes that specifically cover emerging markets, some of the better options are: a class on International Banking taught by Professor Robert Fallon and a course offered last fall '09 on Private Equity in Emerging Markets taught by Roger Leeds.

Other things that CBS prides itself on are entrepreneurship (Eugene Lang Center) and the Media Program.

I hope this helps! Feel free to ask me any other questions about CBS or any other top school on this thread.
