As scientists in one wave after another trying toawaken us to the destruction of ozone sphere that threatens the very survivalof we human species, factories are still polluting great amounts of toxicmaterials while politicians are doing nothing but talking fustians, betrayingthe previously made hypocritical campaign promises. In my opinion, it isextremely important for government to protect wild animals and wilderness forfuture generation, or else we risk extermination of ourselves. Firstof all, it is universally acknowledged that we human species amounts to only asmall part of the environment and is therefore subject to probable jeopardy ofthe destruction of the biosphere. The extinction of one specific species mightset into motion a chain of extinctions of certain species with whom we humansare intricately bound together in a grand pattern we cannot see through ourmyopia. A failure to protect certain wild animals and wilderness will probablylead to environmental disaster which we cannot afford. For instance, had wedeal with the toxic pollutants earlier, no children would have died of foodcontamination. Only by properly protecting the wilderness can our species leada sustainable path. Moreover,the conservation of certain animal and wilderness is beneficial because of thepotential value laid within them, which are not yet identified with the presenttechnology. Common sense informs us that the wilderness is a gene depository, atreasure waiting to be found as our knowledge about the wilderness is stilllimited. The enormous gaps in our knowledge, the sparseness of our observationand the superficiality of our theories call attention to the opportunity costof losing certain valuable species when destroying the biosphere about which weknow little yet. For instance, by reckless deforestation of the Amazonrainforest, we might have possibly endangered a certain kind of insect thatmight turn out to be a cure for aids. The richness of the wilderness is by nomeans infinite and will be destroyed rapidly without proper protection. Henceit is vital for government to preserve the resources we cannot yet identifiedso far for future generations. Finally,although it believed it is vital for government to protect wild animals andwilderness for future generations, I mean neither that individuals or otherorganizations apart from governments can relax and turn a blind eye toenvironment protection, nor that development is forbidden. First, it is equallyimportant, if not more, for individuals and NGOs to take their part inenvironment protection since governments are by nature subject to certaindrawbacks-for example, low efficiency, bureaucracy and so on. The participationof individuals and NGOs can augment the power significantly and can raise morewidespread influence and attention while stimulate the governments to do betterunder more intense supervise. Secondly, preserving the wilderness doesn’tnecessarily exclude any development but emphasize the wisdom required to reduceand manage the possible harm it might brought about. After all, the spirit ofsustainable development means to strike a balance between the present and thefuture demands. Inconclusion, it is undoubtedly important for governments to protect wild animalsand wilderness due to the possible harm it might bear and the potential valuesthat remained unknown. However, by stressing the governments’ part I don’tpreclude the responsibilities of individuals and NGOs who are also important partsin environment conservation. What’s more, proper development of the environmentis necessary since it is important to strike a balance between presentgenerations and future ones. Only through wise practice of environmentprotection and development can we enhance the well-being of all generations.
