C中即使they的指代正确，也要用they did so，而不是单单they did，只有did so才能指代 colonized the islands of the West Indies整个action，没有这个so我们不知道whey they did what?造成意思不完整
C的第二点个人觉得在于to determine,把这句话提炼一下 the discovery could provide important clues（ to determine）， who determine? 我们知道to do 也要有动作的发出者，discovery显然不能determine，clues也不能主动determine；另外to do表purpose，for doing这里用来形容clues，clues for what？这里for doing更加合适~
另外 provide 。。。for貌似是一个idiom

你说的有道理，但你的这句话是GMAT的题目吗？如果不是的话，个人觉得可能没有参考意义。这是我个人的看法，不是在challenge，呵呵

我举这个例子是为了说明我同意bej的观点，they 有指代islands的嫌疑啊，我只是为bej提供一个例句罢了
这个为什么需要是gmat的题呢？

不好意思，理解错误；
我的意思就是说，你的句子虽然正确，但是不一定能说明问题，因为毕竟不是GMAC写得句子，觉得GMAT的句子更有说服力而已。sorry, if you feel offensed

and前后的how 和when 并列了 they优先指代 mammals 对位指代可以这样理解吗？
