As a Singaporean, I beg to defer. I'm sorry that you come away with our country with that view in mind, but I assure you that we have as much a 'culture' and a 'history' as you do. That culture and history may seem convoluted because of our multi-cultural tradition, and may have been adversely affected by a collective short-memory because of government censorship (which is something that most people should find familiar- see Japan and WW2, China and Tiananmen, the US and their supposed 'fair and objective media', and so on).

Nonetheless, we do have a culture. It is evident to me that Singaporeans (and Malaysians, as well as other South-east Asians) have a different work ethic, set of values, and view on what's important in life. We also have a history that (depending on who you ask) stretches back to the Indonesian prince Sang Nila Utama, or in more recent history included Malaysian Sultans, British colonial planning, and for a while Japanese occupancy.

I'm sorry that the people you met have been xenophobic, or showed a taste for western life (but then again, isn't this the case in many countries? everywhere I go, people seem to have a taste for the exotic. Sometimes it's Korean, sometimes Japanese, sometimes Western, sometimes Chinese. Those who are different from ourselves are often most interesting). Or even that they have tended to be arrogant. Often times, it may simply be that they don't understand Chinese culture, and so they reject what they are unfamiliar with. Our cultures have evolved very differently, and their negative behaviour may simply be because they are afraid of making a wrong move in front of you. I think if you take the effort to get to know us better, you'll find that not all of us are as bad as you have made us out to be.

Gosh, Jason is here huh?haha. ok..cool.

Well, honestly, I am kinda suprised to know singaporean here in this forum; in that case,  I shall have repharsed it better...The words just burst out..I do apologized for it

I strongly believe that it is ridiculous to judege one person simply based on his nationality.I can feel that you are smart and open-minded. However, the phenomena I would like to address here is the  general culture rather than the elite culture. I agree that every country has its hisotorical n cultural roots but I guess there is a discrepancy on the thickness.

Honestly, i do not really agree with your explanation on discrimination against Chinese. I think it is  the feeling of 'innate superiority' over Chinese or Maylay or Indian. You are just overly proud of yourself.(Ok, dun get it wrong, not refer to you but to the general singaporean, both the rich and the poor)

Anyway, Dear Jason, I totally understand how you feel.I would spare no effort in defending China as well.

I just share whatever I feel and hope I d no piss u off.
