when从句的修饰问题

1. young men and women still experience some of the essfects of a divorce occuring when a child.

以前的讨论帖说when a child就近修饰divorce, 所以变成divorce is a child逻辑意思不对

2.people tend to overestimate the amount of energy used by visible equipment, such as lights, that must be turned on and off and underestimate it when used by unobtrusive equipment.

以前的讨论帖说poeple....when used ...,所以used的主语可以是people,这样就变成了when people are used by the equipment,逻辑意思不对

我想问的是为什么第二句不能象第一句一样理解为when used by 就近修饰it，it就是指代the amount of every,这样逻辑意思不就对了吗？

我认为，句子1里面主要错在时间连词when+名词不符合状语从句省略的格式吧..其次是a child无法与men andd women配对才错的，至于when a child我认为不可能是修饰divorce的...状从在此只能修饰主语men and women.楼主以前看的讨论帖解释应该是有差错的。

第二个句子我差点看疯了...怎么看也是个错误的句子，后来仔细一看楼主下面的补充才发现真的是个错误句子...下次楼主还是贴全吧，至少把整个句子贴全了....根据语法书里状从省略的一定是主语！
