Recently, there is an issue about the role a government play in business activities. Some people believe that even in the best situation, a government is a tremendous burden to business, while others hold the opposite opinion. It is true that the government act as a complicated role. In my point of view, the judgment should be discussed in different situations. A government can be helpful to some extent when the policies are made appropriate. Meanwhile, it could have a bad effect to business in some situations.

Government could be useful and necessary in the international business. In the modern society, if is important for a government to release some policies that could assist the domestic companies to gain the share of the global market. If there is no tariff which protects the local companies, the exporting good could severely damage the business. Also, the policies can be use to protect the benefit of some foreign company to operate. For some high-technology plants, when they enter China, the government provides many benefits to facilitate them, which include reducing tax, permitting special orders and so forth. Without these policies, it is difficult for these firms to occupy such a large market share in such a great speed. Therefore, government can help the business.

On the other hand, a government could be a burden to business. For some strategies that are tried by a certain firm, there would be some restrictions from the government since the government has its own concern about the whole economic environment, the politic situation, or the other affects that could happen if the strategies are put into practice. It is possible that for a government that concerns more about the security of the country, it may ban the foreign trade and as a result hurt the revenue of some exporting firms. For example, there is a certain prohibition about exporting gas in US. For a gas company, the international market price is much higher than the domestic price. However, the government restricts the exporting of oil from the long-term aspect.

To sum up, like each coin has two sides, a government could be a useful weapon and a burden to business. For different situations or different firms, it takes the different position. Since the aim of the policies made by the government is to make the economic grow faster, it is important for the business to make a good analysis to the current situation and try to seize the opportunity while avoid the threat made by the government policies.
