三個問題:其一: 我该主攻General Management or Private Equity?

我的背景说明:

33岁，Telco carrier的Product Manager team leader，最多管理九个PM。
    
工作经验九年，1年报社、2年服役、6年PM&BM(五年是管理职)，
    
BA in journalism (GPA 3.0), MA in some Big Ten University Telecom(GPA 4.0)
GMAT 700, Toefl 273
目标: top 10 MBA

问题一: 我该主攻General Management  or Private Equity?

我的问题可能很蠢，而且好像应该先想清楚。但想听听前人的意见。我知道我申请的强项会是Strategy Analysis & general management，但是in my heart我对Private Equity & VC很向往，起因是我去年曾经是某个US billion dollar merger 项目leader。
    

基于这段经验我了解了M&A的初貌，及Post Merger整合的经验，但是PE / VC 比较是finanace的领域，如果我的essay着重在进入PE，是否会降低我的强项，影响我的profile，因为年纪如此大要进入finance似乎有点太晚了。
    

还是我应该stick with general management，先进入program再说。
    不知方式哪一种会有风险?
     

问题三:哪个Top Program较喜欢我的profile? 我的机会较大?

问题2. 33岁有无需注意的，会不会是申请的minus，我只知道大部分的Mean是
    28，不知年长者的profile如何。

That is true. But, in my point of view, EMBA is good for networking and MBA is good for knowledge building. If I can't get a MBA offer, which is a long time dream for me, I will go for EMBA.

But this year, I just can't stop chasing my M7 dream.

Stick with which you have the greatest passion and clearest thinking. Nobody can tell you which one is better for your enrollment. many people go to b-school for career switch. Also you can choose the marketing. So think more and don't limit yourself at the beginning.

hm, if you want to get enrolled in M7, just go ahead. I know last year wharton admitted a women over 35 years old and maybe more older applicants in china. so age definitly is not your shortcoming but you should demonstrate you're truely excellent from the essays since your long WE. Meanwhile you still keep your curiosity and open mind in b-school.

In terms of your profile, you definitly can try Kellogg and Wharton

hehe, Only adcom know and your package says.

but overall your background is very unique. Think more and prepare your essays well, you have great opportunity to many top b-schools.

you should be just fine. PE is hard to get in. Harvard and Stanford are two exceptions. If you are applying for UMich and tell them you want to get into PE, they will love your idea but MAY question your unrealistic goal.

After your MBA, you can always change your mind and do whatever you're passionate about.  But for the application, it's probably more convincing if you say you need a general management training.  In the US, top PE firms like HBS graduates who have Ivy league undergraduate AND i-banking experience.  Yes, they do hire people from other backgrounds but the chances are just different.   

Your role in the billion $ merger is ok, but many 26 years olds in New York have "leadership" experience in $20+ billion M&A/PE deals.  Think about this when you craft your essays.  Focus on the stories only you can tell.     

Wharton would be your best shot.  You might want to focus on 3-4 other schools from the top 15.
