ok,->OK, we'v->’vetalked->been talking about the->early agriculture near->in the earlyeast.so->nearlets->east. So let’s concentrate on one site and see what we can learn
->from it.let'->. Let’s ok,c...um..->look at Catalhoyuk. Ah… I'->d->better write that down .c ..taht'->. Catalhoyuk, that’s what we->aboutget->as close as we get in english.it'->English. It’s terkish.,->Turkish, really.
the
->. The sites in mordern->modernterkey->dayTurkey, and who knows what the origin->originalhabitat->inhabitants called.anyway,cis->it. Anyway, uh…Catalhoyuknot->wasn’t the first agiculture->agriculturalsetllment->settlement in
->the neareast ,->near east, but it was pretty early,->, settled about 9000 years ago,->in the nero...period.and->Neolithicperiod. And ... umm... the settlement , ->...ah...town really
->, lasted about thoudsands->aof->thousand years and group->grew to 8--10->a size of about eight or ten thousand people.that's->. That certainly made-> makes it one of the largest town->towns in the world at
->that time.what->. Onemakes->ofthis->thesite->things that make the settlement of town->this size impressive is the time period.it'->. It’s the n..period , remeber.->Neolithic, remember, the late stone->Stone Age. So theage,so
people that lived there had only have stone tools,
->, no medlas.so->metals. So everything the complished->theyaccomplished, like buliding->building this towns,, ->town, they did with
stones.
-> just stone, plus wood ,->, bricks,->, that sort of thing.but->. But you got remeber->to remember that was->itnot jsut->wasn’tevery->just any stone they have,->had, they had absidean.
well,abersidean
->obsidian. And umm... obsidian is black , vocanic and->ablack, volcanic, well, almost like glass.I\t->. It flakes very nicely into veery->really sharp points.the->. Thesharp->sharpest tools of iots->the entire Stone Agetools
were made of serbstean.nad
->obsidian. And urrr... the people of Catalhoyuk got them->theirs from futher->further inland,->, from the->centralcentury turkey.->Turkey, traded for,-> it, probably. well, anyway->Anyway, what i
want
->Ito->wanna focus on is the way the town were->was built.the->. The houses are made->alltan...->rectangular, one story->storeywith->made of sunsoundary->dried bricks.but->. But what’s really interesting
->is that there is->are no space->spaces between them,->, no streets in another->other words.->, and so generally no doors on the house->houses either.people->. People walkedwalk->around on the roofs
of
the->andhouses->enteredand->theenter->housein->through a hash->hatchwayway->onand->theroof, down wuith a latter.you->wooden ladder. You can still see the diagnal->diagonal marks of hhe->thelatter->laddersinside->inthea->the plaster on the inside walls.
once
->. Once you are->were in the house ,->, there would be one main room,->and a couple of small rooms for storage.the->. The main room had the harse ->hearths, for cooking and
-> for heat.->. It would’vebe->been pretty cold during the wintters.and->winters. And it also looks like they made the->their tools near the fire.there->. There tends to->be a lot of
abersdean
flicks
->obsidian flakes and chips in the harsh->hearth ashes.->, but no chiminy.so the->chimney. The smoke just went out the same way->hatchway that people used fro->for going in and out themselves,
so
->. So there wouldn't->wouldbe->have been an open fire inside the house with only one hole in and out->the roof to let the smoke out.you->. You and I would be->havefounded taht->found it would
be
->a bit too smoky in there.you->. You can see on the walls,->, which they plastic->plastered and decorated with paintings.they->. They ended up->with layers->aand->layerblicks->ofsued->black soot on them.
->, and so did the people'->s lungs.the->. The bones founded->found in the graves showed->show a layer of serd->soot on the inside of the ribs.and->. And that’s another unusual feature of c...
->Catalhoyuk, the bury->burial sites.the->. The graves have been all founded->been found under the houses,->, right on->under the floor.and->floors. And it maybe this burial custom might->thatindicate->explains why the houses were
->packed in so tightly without streets.->. I mean,->, you might think it was for protection or something.->orsomething, but there wouldn't->hasbe->beenany->no evidence found yet of any violence->violentfounded
indicated
->attack that would indicate that kind of danger.Maybe->. It maybe they wanted to deliver->live as near as possible to their ancestors’ gravesancestor's->andgraveand->be buried near them themselves.
but
->. But it makes->a good point. Based on the last escavations,->excavations, we can lay->knowout->the layout of the housed->houses and loacation->theofthe->location of the graves.->, but we are->’re only guessing when we tried to say why they did
-> it that way.->. That is->’s the way what->it is achiology.->with archeology. You are dealing with the phiscal->physicalremainings->remains that people left behind.we->. We have no sure access to what they
->thought and what->howhtey->they felt about things.->. I mean it’sis interesing->interesting to speculate.our->. And thephical->physical artifacts can give ue->us clues.->, but there is a lot we can'->t really know.
so
->. So, for instance,there->, theirare arch.they->art. They painted on the plastic->plastered walls and usually they painted hunting scenes with wild animals in them.now->. Now they didi->did hunt.->and they
->also raise->raised cerealser..crops and kept sheeps.->sheep, but we have->don’tno ideas->know why somany->sopainting->many of the paintings are of hunting scenes. Waswith->it supposed riligious->toand->have religious or magical significance?
->? That'->s the kind of thing that we can only guess that->at based on clues. and->And hopefully, future->furtherescavations->excavation of Catalhoyuk will..butprobably->yield more clues. But we’ll probablywillnever->never know for sure. [tpo1--5]

so->So we'v->ve been discussing 16th century native->Nativeamerican->American life, andlives.today we'rewill->going to focus on e..->Iroquois and h..->Hooray peoples.->. They lived in the
northeast
-> northeastern great lakes region of north->Northamerican.Their->America. Now, backlife->then, their livesdepend->depended on the natural resourses->resources of forest->the forests, especially the
->birch tree.->. The birch tree can live->grow in many different types of soil->soils and its->it'sproblem->prevalent in that area.->. Now can anyone here describe the
->birch tree? um..they->Stu: They are tall,->and white, the bark,i->, I mean. ->. Pro: Yes!->. The birch tree has white bark->, and the->this tough protective
outlayer
is->outer layer of the tree, this white bark.it's->, iswhaterproof->waterproof. Andand its->this waterproof quality is->of the bark, it made it useful to->formake->making things like cooking containers.
and
->, avarity->variety of vessels.and->utensils. And if you peal->peelbarch->birch bark in the winter,->, we can->callhe->it ‘the winter bark, ->', another layer,thetough->a tougher inner layyer
->layer of the tree.It adheres to the bark, producng->producing a stronger material.->. So the winter bark was useful->usedto->forlarge->largerjutensal->utensilsof->and containers.
->. Stu: I know people made->makejutensal->utensils out of wood, but jutensal->utensils out of tree bark? Pro: Well->, birch bark is poliable->pliable and very easy to bend.->. The native
people
->Native Americans would cut the bark and fold it into any shape they needed.Then->, then secure it->with cords until it'sdry.->dried. They could fold the bark into many shapes.
->. Stu: So if they cooked the->inbows->bowls made of birch bark,->, wouldn't that make the food taste funny? Pro: Oh, that's one of the great thing->thingsabout
the
->ofgreat->birch bark.->. The taste of the birch tree dosn->doesn't transfer->get transferred to the food.->. So it was perfect for the cooking containers.
->. But the most impotant->important use of the bark, byis->far, was the canon.->canoe. Since the northeast->northeasternstreage->region of northeast->Northamerica->American is interconnect->interconnected bywith
many streams and waterways,->, water transportation by vessles->vessels like canon->a canoe was most essential.->. The path->paths through the worlds->woodswas->were often overgrown,
->over-grown, so water travel was much faster.now->. And here'sis->what the native->Nativeamerican->Americans did.->. They would peal->peel large sheeds->sheets of bark of->from the tree to form lightway,
the
->light-weightdirty->yetcanons.->sturdy canoes. The bark is->wasstreched->stretched over frame->frames made of->from tree bretches.stick-> branches, stitched together and seal->sealed with the reson...you->resin. You know that the->stickystick
liqiud
->liquid that comes out of the tree? Andand->when it dries, it'sits water tight.->watertight. One great thing is->of these birch bark canon->canoesis->was that they can->could carry a large amount of cargo.
->. For example, a canon->canoecan->weighingweight->about 50 pounds can->could carry uo->up to 9->nine people,-> and 250 pounds of cargo. Stu: Wow,but->! But how far could that->theytraval->drive that way?
->? Pro: Well like I said, the northeast->northeastern region is interconnect->interconnectedwith->by rivers and streams , river and oceans->theof->ocean at the coast.->. The canon->canoescould alow->allow them to travel over a vast
->area that today it would take a few hours to fly over.you->. You see->, the native->Nativeamerican->Americans made canons->canoes of all types,, ->, for travel on small streams or on large
->open ocean waters.->. For small streams, they made samll->narrow, maneuverableand m..boats,whie->, while a large canons->canoeare->was needed for the ocean.->. They can->could travel through->throughout the
->area only occationally->occasionally having the->to portage->, to carry the overland, the->canoe over a land short distance to the->another nearby streams.SInce->stream. And since the canon->canoesis->were so light,'
it
->, thiswas->wasn't a difficult task.Well->. Now how do you think it->thisaffect->affected their life->lives? If->Stu: Well if they could->travel so easily to->over such a large area,->, they could trade
->with people in->from other areas, ->which I guess would lead them to form license->alliances? Pro: Exactly, having ->. Having an effecient->efficient means of transpotation
would
->transportation, well, that helps the Iroquois to form ahelp....federation linked by the->naturalnatual->waterways. Andwater ways.This->this federation expended->expanded from southern->what is now Southern Canada,->all the way south to the down...river,
and
->Daleverits->River. Andeffecience->this efficiency of birch canon->bark canoe also made new->ancommerce->impressionto->on newcomers of the area.->. French traders in the 17th century,model-> modeled their..->...well, ->they adopted
->the design of ..barchcanon,->Yreka’s birch bark canoes, and they can->foundtravel->theya->could travel great distance->distances more than 15 kilometers a month.->. Now besides of the bark,native->, Native Americansamerican
also use->used the wood of the birch tree, ->. The young trees were used for->to support for logins->loggings with the waterproof bark used as roofing.->. Branches are->were folded into snow
->shoes and native->the Native American people are->were alladapt->adept to running very fast on->over the snow on->inthis->these birch brank->brand snow shoes.Ifyou->whichare->iftrying->youto->everwalk->tried walking in this snow shoes,
->you know it is->wasn't easy.->
