Chicago Full-time vs. Part-time

I am a Chicago admit and I am just notified by my current employer that the company may send me to Chicago office for two years, since I am also planning to start my full-time MBA program in September, now I am wondering whether I can possibly change to Weekend MBA program and work at the same time.

I have consulted the school and alumni, they said the transfer is possible but part-time MBA may take up to 3 years. School said the faculty/classes are exactly the same but there are a number of differences in terms of experience and recruitment opportunities between part-time and full-time.

The reason that I am considering it is that I am not uncomfortable with my current job and have somewhat insecure sense of losing job for two years and desperately get back to the job market in my thirties after graduation.

Now I sincerely want to listen to other CDers advices as you may have gone through all this already, correct me if my above concerns are just tunnel view.

you may want to talk to some current part-time students, or any of the graduated part-time MBAs. Usually they will have the insights.

In general, if you want to switch career, full-time program will give you a better chance.

kkgmat's opinion is very true. Since the limitations on career service, only very few part-time students can change careers, such as change to IB or MC. So it is better for you to stay in the full-time program...But if you want to stay in the same industry, and get employer sponsorship, then part-time may be fine...

Good luck!

I am currently doing MBA full-time and have a friend as a part-time. Since she has to work in the daytime and usually attends classes in the evening, it seems difficult for her to make time attending any alumni net-working event hold by the school, information session hold by recruiting companies. Her classmates rarely hang out together compared with full-time students.

But I believe as a part-time, you have some benefits too. Your classmates bring up undate industry information for class participation. Meanwhile, you have nice income to cover expenses, especially if you have a family to take care.
