可否有人可以幫我解釋為何下列的正確答案要用to be of.不好意思.我對於ETS的解說不甚明白:
Astronomers at Palomar Observatory have discovered a distant supernova explosion, one that they believe is a type previously unkonown to science.
(A) that they believe is
(B) that they believe is to be
(C) they believe that it is of
(D) they believe that is
(E) they believe to be of

of表示从属，没有它不通，因为你不能说supernova explosion是一个种类。只能说它属于某个种类。

believe to be 是固定用法。

首先确定要用of表示属于某个种类，而不是supernova explosion本身是种类。
只有C, E
C的情况下they believe其实是插入语，去掉they believe不影响句子完整性，但是此处去掉就不对了one that it is of （应该是one that is of）。

be of 应该是一种惯用法，表示某物具有某种状态，这一点你可以看看张叨真语法，
用to be ,是不是表示一种将来的状态？

一点浅见，请指教

我觉得若是把这儿解释所谓的one of …的结构，感觉很怪，其一是好像没见过one of a type的句型，其二则是这个 one是标准代词型式，代表前面的a distant supernova explosion，若做one of a type，会使后面这句话成了前面的同位语，句意会改变

比较合理的说法，姑且称之为be 动词的平衡，也就是说，one they believed to be of a type中的of，只是为了让one = a type，基于one 不可能直接等同于 a type，所以得加入一个介词of ，使其平衡

用比较简单的道理说，他身陷险境- He is danger.(x)两边不可能相等，不可能画上等号

但加入一个介词就不同了- He is in danger.(o)也就是让后面变形为形容词词组，进而形容he

同样的道理 one (a explosion)不可能等于a type .但若是加入一个of，解释这爆炸是一种先前科学界不了解的型式，就能够让句子的两头平衡。之后再they believed to be插入，结束，选E
