The explanation says D is wrong because in their performing is wordy and imprecise.

To me, while performing in E is no better than in their performing in D.

Can someone shed some light on this question?

有performance做名词形式，为什么要用 performing 的动名词呢？
while performing 是强调动作，在该用动词形式表达清晰准确的时候，改用名词来表达，ETS认为是笨拙的。注意体会本句的逻辑意思。

小月说的对，名词形式优先于动名词．
是不是也可以理解成ＷＨＩＣＨ不能指代ＳＥＮＴＥＮＣＥＳ啊？我就钻到这里面了．

同意，而且用remain unconfined in their performing...这样的表达方式似乎有点歧义的感觉哦，原文应该是在强调“在...的时候”，用动名词在语法理论上好像没有破绽，但是实际上整体语感和结构就不对了，有点累赘

新东方老师讲课的时候也说过，能用名词的不用动名词，比如the declining of sth.就是错的，应为the decline of sth.

我觉得这里的given community service sentences是说特定的sentences，而d中which前面没有逗号，即为限定性修饰，如果用which就有歧义说所有的sentences都会allow them to remain unconfined in their performing of specific jobs
