现在完成时表示动作发生于过去，结果对现在有影响，这个fossils被dated at 34 million years old是已经发生了的动作，但是对现在有影响——making it the earliest...，（PS：making在这里是make的ing形式，作结果状语，所以说是对现在有影响），所以现在完成时用在这里是最准确的吧！ 如果一定要用一般过去时，把D中的have been dated at...making...改成were dated at...having made...从语法角度讲好像也没有大错？只是意思就变成，fossils是过去发现的，在过去的那个时间里，sloth成了最古老的植物（但是现在不一定还是最古老的）。但是即使这样，也没有have done完成时态表示对现在的影响好。
