When he used an icebox of his own design to transport his butter to market, he found that customers would pass up the rapidly melting stuff in the tubs of his competitors to pay a premium price for his butter, still fresh and hard in neat, one-pound bricks.

he found that customers would pass up the rapidly melting stuff in the tubs of his competitors to pay a premium price for his butter他发现顾客不会去选择会放在tub里面融化的很快的butter(他对手生产的,而会付一个比较好的价钱去买他的butter,),pass up是不屑一顾的意思 ,
still fresh and hard in neat, one-pound bricks(一英镑一块butter).
