Ross Darden Johnson Haas Stern Fuqua
GPA
looking for consistency: drop or increase
what major courses did you take
did you challenge yourself
Self awareness: take necessary steps to improve yourself
as the evidence how successful you can handle the class/deal with the company issues
GMAT
GRE vs GMAT?
no difference. test the same thing
How many times?
as many as you can handle, on average 2-3 times
will look what did you do between the tests to improve
if you take the tests over and over with no improvement, that’s not good
Essay
no control:GPA (can’t change it anymore)
kind of control:gmat
whole control: essays
Trends this year: fewer essays
Most important: be yourself
they want to truly get to know you through your essay
they can tell if you are transferring one essay to another, so don’t do it
After you finish your essay, pass it to the people who know you well. And ask them two questions
1. what do you think the question should be?
if they can’t tell, it means that your essay is out of topic and doesn’t meet the requirement
2. does it sound like me?
Proofreading!!!!!
What shall you write for an optional essay? bullet form will be enough
1. unexpected performance on your academic score
explain what situation and what happen
BUT don’t sound like an excuse
2. don’t have the recommendation letter from your direct supervisor
3. gap on your resume (more than 2-3 months)
you need to cover it up
Recommendation letters
generally 2 required, umich one (double check for your application)
from current supervisor, if you can’t get it, it’s fine. Just indicate it in the optional essay
For entrepreneur/family business, find the most current supervisor/client
For undergraduate students, find internship/volunteer supervisor
no recommendations letter from professors. the academic prospective is different from the professionals
Letter from CEO?
NO, better from a person who you intact with on a day to day basis
To get a solid letter:
sit down and talk with your supervisor, not email back and forth
at least 6 week before your application
don’t tell him what to write
a solid example for each question, not a word not a sentence
Interview
how to perform as a professional
how your perform in a one-on-one scenario
whether you will fit the community
Open questions
How to judge AWA and IR scores?
AWA: 4-6 good; below 4 some concerns(not big deal if you have good essays); not too low
IR: not use it, but not too low like 1 or 2
Which round to apply?
no difference, but not the final round
especially if you can’t prepare your profile well, there’s no advantage to apply for round one
your profile needs to be strong enough compared with others in the same pool
if you need fundings, apply early
Resume-the first thing to look at
if you struggle with the GMAT/essays for a long time, then put it down and move on (mention several times, just a portion of your application, especially the gpa/gmat. if you have the qualified score (like an average score, they will move on to the next portion of your profile)
pay attention to the quant courses you have taken
for the scores, they just want some confidence that you will be successful on the program. they emphasis more on what you will add to the program
Try and enjoy the process
it’s not just the investment for two years. it’ s the changing point of your life, in other words, the investment for your whole life |
