各位nn，请教一下ving在句中做修饰成分的时候时态怎么理解呢？
Scientists have recently discovered what could be the largest and oldest living organism on Earth, a giant fungus that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles spawned by a single fertilized spore some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than 30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest.

(A) extending
(B) extends
(C) extended
(D) it extended
(E) is extending
这道题里正确选项是a，以前看过一个Ron解释说ving修饰词可以参考main verb来判断时态，ving的动作表示和主句动作同时进行，即simultaneously，（原谅我英语原文的解释没有记住，只记住了相应的汉语意思

）按照这个理解，这里extending的时态是根据is（a giant fungus that is）来判断是属于对现在的描述，但问题来了是理解为fungus的一般情况，即a giant fungus extends还是理解成a giant fungus is extending？
同样According to United States Air Force officials, a cannon shooting dead chickens at airplanes has proved helpful to demonstrate what kind of damage can result when jets fly into a flock of large birds.
(A) shooting dead chickens at airplanes has proved helpful to demonstrate
(B) shooting dead chickens at airplanes has proved itself helpful as a demonstration of
(C) shooting dead chickens at airplanes proves itself helpful as demonstrating
(D) that shoots dead chickens at airplanes proves itself helpful to demonstrate
(E) that shoots dead chickens at airplanes has proved helpful in demonstrating
这道题如果按照上面那种解释的话shooting的时态应该和has proved一致，即has proved的同时大炮在shooting，这样理解对吗？

不存在时态问题

第二题
答案应该是E吧？
anyway 无论如何 shooting 在这里也是作定语不存在时态的问题

你需要好好了解一下v-ing的成分
什么时候做noun modifier 什么时候做verb modifier
只有在逗号+v-ing的时候 v-ing做verb modifer修饰前面整个句子【即便这个原则也不是100%绝对的】

对，我是说第一题的extending修饰fungus怎么理解呢，是理解为fungus is extending now？还是理解为fungus extends？第二题的a选项的shooting在这里理解为the cannon was shooting吗？a选项是不是因为错误的把意思表达成了shoot和prove这两个动作同时进行？
请指点

extending 不是修饰fungus
是修饰 spawned 前面的名词
an interwoven filigree spawned and extending
extending做定语

has proven helpful的是 cannon
A里面 a cannon shooting dead chickens 让人困惑
究竟主语是 a cannon, 还是 shooting, 还是 chickens
helpful in 表方式，也比helpful to do 表目的要好
紧挨着的名词的v-ing不是动词是noun modifier 不存在时态！

extending和spawned是平行修饰fungus，因为filigree不能被spawn，只有fungus才能被spawn，这里是跳跃修饰。第二题的正确选项就是e，help in是正确的习惯用语，而且主语是cannon，我觉得第二题的破题点还是在于shooting和that shots的区别上

但是还有一点不明白，第二题的shooting是修饰的cannon我理解，但是是何时shot的呢？shot的动作是何时发生的？先于prove，还是和prove同时进行的？这要怎么判断？同样第一题的extend是何时extend，是现在正在extending吗？

v-ing 和定语从句相比
较为简洁
但是劣势是它无法表明时态
