University students should not be required to attend classes. Instead, they should be able to receive credits through a final test or paper.
Have you ever been absent to a class? Anyway, I do. University students are exposed to more choices from which they can gain knowledge nowadays. Subsequently, fierce debates on whether attendance to classes is neccessary for receiving credit are brought up. i consider it essential to attend classes for university student instead of gaining credit with merely a final test or paper.
From my perspective, elementary and constructional knowledge of a subject can be acquired in class with professors introducing the efficient method. To enter a new field of study is like to master a language, we have to learn its pronunciation and grammar. In classes, this can be taught in an efficient and accurate way by professors. Time can thus be saved.
Let alone the benefit from efficient study, the process of study and interaction with professors and classmates is what I appreciated most. Take my economics classes for example, when learning a new concept, our professor try to tell us its up-to-date appliance; when solving a problem, I can take advise from my classmates; when doing case studies, we debate on the best solution. These experience can never be obtained without attending classes.
On the other hand, it's the ability to practice, not the arbitrary decision from the result of final test or paper illustrate students' mastery of the knowledge. A final test or paper usually failed to examine a student comprehensively.
Although divergent choice can be picked by university students which may consequently lead to diversity of college life, attending classes enables us to learn knowledge in an efficient way, to gain valuable study experiences and to present your mastery of knowledge comprehensively. Thus I reinforce that university students should be required to attend classes, and credit should not be received through merely a final test or paper. |
