应该是结果状语，用ing形式

那是主句的结果状语还是从句的结果状语，而且具体到这个句子，它有三层；1 ；show that 。2 acute stress affect ……3 the way……
它是那个的结果状语呢？

但是这样一来就很奇怪，既不就近也不修饰主句；而且那个it指代也成问题，似乎是说影响大脑…… 那又在第三层里

可以理解啊，it指代brain。句子结构没问题就行，分析句子，可以一层层的剥离，先把最主干的部分拿出来，再拿出次主要的，最后拿出剩下的，一般的句子最多三重，偶尔会出现更多

这个句子，后面的 causing 叫做动名词的独立主格结构。这个句子相当于以下两个句子：
A new review shows that acute stress affects the way the brain considers the pros and cons. A new review causes it to focus on pleasure and ignore the possible negative consequences of a decision.
此处独立主格作为 shows 这个动作的结果，因此整个独立主格结构做名词性的结果状语。

突然就想起来语法学家们互相批评的时候常说的一句话；这个解释”语法上经不起检验，语义上经不起推敲，逻辑上自相矛盾“。
