do you agree or disagree with the following statement:
at universities and colleges, sports and social activities are just as important as classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support
Classes and libraries in universities and colleges are easy to attract financial support. However, it is much harder for sports and social activities in their grant fighting. To address the question on whether sports and social activities should get equal financial support as classes and libraries do, I think we need to perform the content-based analysis, and treat different contents separately.
First, sports, as an important approach for health improvement, should be strongly supported. Health is a key factor in people's lives and is worthy to get investment. Meanwhile, sports are beneficial to strengthen students' relationship. Teammates and competitors in a sport game can always form close personal relationship which is a precious resource for students, not only for their college living, but also for their lives after graduation. Furthermore, sports is an approach to satisfy students psycological needs and keep them happy. For instance, the winners in a sport game are always seen as heros and heroins in their university. People enjoy the respectation and the honor, which can not only spur them in their physical exercises, but also promote them to study hard in their classes.
Secondly, social activities need to be divided into two groups, the general or public social activities and the personal type. The public social events are very important for students, through which students can learn how to build network with others, make new friends, and exchange their informations. An anniversary party of the university is a good example. Students from different departments and different grades get a chance to see and know each other. They also easily to contact their professors and mentors in the party.
On the other hand, the social activities that only involved in few people may not be supported by universities. For example, a small group of student going to a bar on Saturday night is a social event for them, but, it is too personal to be supported by an organizaion.
And, students may not like to get such financial support. As a personal issue, some students may want to keep it as a secret or share it only with their close friends. If an organization supports it, the receiptors may need to submit report to the donor and release the details of the activities, which may not be acceptable for the students.
Above all, in my personal view, sports should receive financial support strongly, however, social activities should be treated diversely based on the scale and aims of the activities.
