12.27 People can learn more from watching television than by reading books.
In this day and age, television, once called the greatest invention in the 20th century, is playing a more and more important role in our daily life. Because of televisions, we can watch movies at home and turn a living room into a mini cinema. Also, thanks to televisions, we can watch news with lively scenes rather than just read the words on a newspaper. However, when it comes to learning, books are always the best media which televisions can never compete. Here are some reasons: To begin with, books are the best teaching tools ever, since the content in them is carefully examined to help people learn. Unlike television, which was mainly invented for entertainment, books are born to teach and their teaching mission never fades since the civilization of human beings rose. In order to teach without misleading readers, a book will be revised for several times by different people before its publication and its author can take the responsibility for what he has written. Even if there are some errors in a book, they will probably be corrected in the next edition. Thus, books are the authority of our academic study. If we want to collect information or do research, books always become perfect references. Nevertheless, television programs have far lower level of reliability and we can never use it as references. Moreover, books give us the opportunity to ruminate and memorize. Actually, when we decide to read a book, we often choose a peaceful place like the library, where we can get concentrated and prepare for the learning. Then, if we come across some difficulties during the reading, we can pause at any time, do some review, ruminate the most confusing part, and even take down some notes. Obviously, after those procedures, puzzles and knowledge will become part of our memory and be locked in our brains. For example, I still remember the beautiful sentences I once wrote down while reading a literature books during high school. With the help of those notes, I have learned how to write great articles in Chinese. On the contrary, when watching television, we may just want to relax. Even though we watch some educational programs, they merely flash across and leave us no time to digest. As an old Chinese saying says:“it is always beneficial to open a book.” Compared to televisions, books have so many natures conductive for us to learn that they should be the best teachers in our daily life. |
