73.Colleges and universities should require all faculty to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.
Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position.

The policy claimed a suggestion for all the colleges and universities to mandate their faculty to practise their expertise not only in the academic field but also in the non-academic fields.
To our acknowledges, college/university faculty are eihter highly-educated or people with extraordinary performance in their precedent working field. Should we expect them all to dedicate themselves to the academic world, obviously not. As we know, the laboratories in the college/university are not solely funded by the government, but also by many other coporations. The faculy need money to proceed to their study meanwhile the coporations need the college/university's expertism to help them developing the next generation of technology. Besides, to speak in the perspective of students, they need more than just text books filled with theories. Not all of the students are interested in research and pursue a further study to get a master/Phd degree, many of them may need more practical and up-to-date knowledge that connects to the job market closely than classic text books that were written years ago. It is definitely quite beneficial for college/university faculty to participate in unacademic work in the field of their profession and take the experience they get back to the calss for their students.
However, the policy has its benefit and rationality does not pose it in an unquestionable place. Imagine if we have all the faculty to work as part-timer out of the academic field, can we be sure that they can handle all the work and give a higher prority to the academic work than their avocation. I know many college/university faculty, they do their work because they like to be teachers or they want to be a pioneer in their research field which may have nothing to do with any extant technology or theory. What would happen if they are pushed to spend time work on unacademic works. Some of them may find working on profitable projects makes them much more money than their school work does, in that case we may lose an promising scientist or educator.
In summary, this policy is defective and should not be put into practice unconditionally. We need teachers possess practical experience who can offer student diverse information in classes, also we need teachers who are dedicated to their research and developing of the future scholars. |
