ISSUE147: Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.

Explosive development of culture, art and science has been made during the past decades of years. When it comes to the society of human beings, there are so many tremendous changes have been done in all areas of the world that we can easily tag them with tradition and modernization. Have, you may wonder, are tradition and modernization mutual exclusive? Admittedly, there are many obvious differences and conflicts between tradition and modernization. However, as a matter of fact, tradition and modernization are generally harmonious.

Actually, on the one hand, many fields of modern world such as art, technology and architecture, are promoted based on the tradition achievements, that provide people with inexhaustible inspiration and original material. On the other hand, the fact that in many areas of the world more and more young people give up traditional custom of their own countries and identify with modern life that is leaded mainly by western countries, may give people such impression that tradition and modernization can not exist together.

In addition, in some areas, the significant development of modernization not only has resulted in little compatibility with tradition, but also tends to, in the opposite direction, weaken the protection and research of tradition facilities. As is known to all, Starbuck, which is one of the biggest coffee bars in United States, has setup several outlets in traditional places of interest in China including Tiann square; dramatic city expansion, that severely threaten so many tradition historic antiques in the world, becomes increasingly sophisticate; and the extinction speed of tradition culture is far more higher than ever before, due to which perhaps some languages used by few people will disappear from our planet. No one could deny that all of these problems are to a large extent connected to incompatibility between tradition and modernization.

However, as a matter of fact, those incompatibility is only within a small part of the whole world, and tradition and modernization are not paradoxical but usually congruous. Just consider Beijing summer Olympic, which is the perfect combination of tradition culture and modern technology, received world wide attention and finally got tremendous success, due to subtle fusion of tradition and modernization.

Although sometimes making tradition and modernization to work together seamlessly is not easy and straightforward, it is always feasible and there is no need to force ourselves to choose between them. It is true that we now live in a world that benefits from both tradition and modernization, so neither of them can be omitted or deprecated

In sum, even though that some conflicts are still between tradition and modernization, yet only in small number of areas around the world. Actually, tradition and modernization are congruous at most of the fields. As a result, we should integrate them carefully and there is no need to choose intentionally.
