With the rapid development of our society, people place much greater emphasis on education than ever before. Accordingly, a hot topic comes into being and is widely discussed among people: is it easier for us to get educated than in the past? As far as I am concerned, people living in the modern society are indeed easier to acquire knowledge and education.

To begin with, formal education has become considerably more available for children. In the past, many children had to drop out of school because they cannot afford the due tuition. However, this is no longer a disturbing problem. Development of science and technology significantly promotes the productivity, which brings great social wealth. Therefore, most people have enough money to send their children to school. Additionally, with the advent of knowledge economy, our government pays much more attention to the talents cultivation. Thus, more funds are channeled to the education. Due to all the reasons above, today’s children have much bigger chance to get their formal education.

Secondly, various computer technologies make possible the online education, which is unimaginable for those in the past. Internet technology enables today’s people to take all kinds of online courses very conveniently. Take Harvard’s opening courses for instance. Without internet, non-American students could never have the opportunity to take these courses. But now, we can freely enjoy them. Multimedia technology makes some knowledge become more understandable. For example, in the astronomy class, teachers don’t have to take pains to explain how the earth rotates with numerous words. A single piece of vivid animation is already enough tell students about this process. And what’s more, this is much more interesting than the drab principle. In short, computer technologies make it easier for today’s people to take the online education.

Finally, various kinds of training institutes today provide the additional access for people to get their education. In large measure, these institutes compensate the traditional education for ignorance of some aspects. For supporting examples, one needs to look no further than Chinese English education. Due to the lack of specific English environment, even Chinese students are pretty good at reading, many of them can’t express themselves properly in oral form. Inevitably, this poor speaking ability seriously inhibits their communication with all people from abroad. But now, various English training institutes, such as Wall Street English, offer them a good environment to improve their speaking ability. As it turns out, these institutes really work, since many of their students not only dare to speak English, but also speak fluent English, even facing the natives.

To sum up, with more available formal education, more convenient online education, and more accessible compensate education from training institutes, it much easier for today’s people to get educated.

Topic: it is impossible to be completely honest with your friend.

Friendship is an indispensible part of our life. So precious it is that there is no one but longs to own an everlasting friendship. Among various ways we treat friends, many people insist that we should be completely honest with our friends. However, in my view, while I concede the importance of honesty to our friendship, in certain cases, it is unwise to be absolutely honest.

Admittedly, while honesty wins friendship, lie is too often a friendship killer. Dishonesty raises the increasing distrust between friends, which will lead to a superficial relationship, if not a broken one. The one who always makes an excuse for the absence of a party; the one who always lies to you to gain your sympathy and support after doing something wrong; the one who always pretends to be busy when you are in urgent need, is the last person we want to make friend with. Therefore, lies should always be avoided if possible. Only by truly opening our heart to others can we win a sincere and deep friendship.

Vital as honesty is to a true friendship, it is not sensible to be completely honest. In some situations, a white lie is inevitable. On the extreme level, a white lie can save our friends’ lives. For the supporting evidence, one needs to look no further than the famous story Last leaf. Suppose, were the dying girl told the truth that the last leaf on the tree was actually painted but not real, what would happen to her? It’s highly likely that she would die sooner or later. Nevertheless, a white lie of her friend gave her a perpetual hope and led her to recover from the deadly disease. How wise her friend is! Obviously, it works to tell a white lie in some extreme situation.

On the common level, it is also unadvisable to be completely honest. Some words can be wisely withheld, not only to protect our friends from being hurt, but also to strengthen our friendship. For instance, once my friend Belinda borrowed 100 yuan from another of my friend Mary, but carelessly, she forgot to pay it back. Mary mistakenly thought that Belinda was not willing to pay her money back and spoke evil of her. When I talk to Belinda about the money, she said that she just forgot it because she was too busy with her coming test and was going to make an apology to Mary. When she asked me about Mary’s thought, I skipped the bad words and comforted her that Mary just want her money back. Thus, a possible misunderstanding avoided, our friendship was consolidated. In numerous common situations like this, there is undoubtedly no need to be completely honest, for it only serves to do harm to our friends.

So, if there is anyone out there who wonders whether it is proper to be completely honest to our friends; anyone who insists that white lies never do good to our friends; anyone who holds that on no account should message be withheld to our friends, this essay is your answer.
