11 People's behavior is largely determined by forces not of their own making.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
People’s own making and forces are both determinant of people’s behavior, while the former plays the predominate role and the later plays the subordinate role of how people behave in a certain situation. People sometimes claim that they are forced into doing this or doing that. There’s an element of truth in it. When we are socializing, we must obey societal rules or etiquettes so that we are urbanized or avoid being impertinent at the very least. We also yield to reality when we are choosing a career, financial status, for one thing, must be taken into account. Thus we are sometimes forced to give up our dream job so that we can make a living. Finally, there is the law that is always restricting our behaviors. Obeying the laws means that we can’t do whatever we want, especially things that would harm the others. In all these situations, forces are to an extent influencing our behaviors. On the other hand, the ultimate determinant of people’s behavior is still their own making. Though forces may landed us into a certain situation, there are still bounteous of options in that situation and selecting one calls for people’s own making. We must consider all of those options and weigh the pros and cons of them, deciding which one is best for our own interest. Sometimes it seems that there is a lack of choice in a certain situation. However, the real fact is that some options does not appeal to us, it might be self-deprecating or might hurt our loved ones. Furthermore, in some extreme or desperate cases, where there seems to be the single path, it calls even more for people’s own making to strike out creative path. In sum, people’s own making is the major factor that influence how one behaves. Forces and people’s own making is not incompatible. Consider that the reality is a complexity of subjective minds, which is characterized by people’s own making and objective matters, which is characterized by forces. In this light, we can not split the two when we are analyzing people’s behavior. They exist and act on people’s behavior harmoniously. Specifically, forces land one into a certain situation, where there is a whole lot of choices. That person, in response to the situation, use their mind to choose the optimal option and act in a certain way. However, the fact that different people act differently in similar situations calls for our attention. This is the potent prove that it’s people’s own making that ultimately decide their behaviors. Obviously, if people choose different options in a similar situation, the behavior will be quite different and lead to different ends. Think of how an optimism and a pessimism act who are trapped in an icebox which has been turned off for a night. The former survived while the later died of his own fear and imagined frigidity. In a word, mind determines how people behave while forces influence it, to a limited extent. In the final analysis, people’s reaction is complicated, when analyzing it, both mind and forces should be taken into account. However people’s own making is far more important in deciding people’s behavior. (35) |
