Got interested in asset management or investment, so between these two, a MBA with a finance focus and a MSF, which would make it easier for me to break into this industry?

Fyi: I have 5 years of working experience, but totally non-finance related.

Please, can Someone enlighten me,

thanks in advance.

Well, an MSF might be more along your line in this case. Because an MBA CAN be good for career changers, but you have to keep in mind the realities of the job situation etc. That finance recruiters who recruit from MBAs will likely prefer MBA candidates who already have a few years of experience in their pocket. But of you get an MBA it certainly can get you a good way towards a top management job in your industry. Either way, breaking into finance is tough. But if you have faith and a good GMAT ;), you can do it!

of great help, 3ks,  jon frank

so, basically, mab provides two chances. 1, career change, 2, enhance your presence in your original industry,

regarding to my own circumstance, i got 5 years of w/e  in media and journalism, despite a mba, it would  be still extra difficult for me to break into, ( i've thought about breaking into by doing a mab focusing on finance courses, yet your answer kind of frustrated me), though there might be cases succeeding in breaking into, it's not a 100% thing.

am i understanding correctly?

definitely, a msf would provide me with more solid training on finance, which would be favorable when coming to employment, yet i figure that would be mostly entry-level jobs, right?

again, 3ks, jon.

Well, its always hard to break into a new industry, especially when your training is soo different. Getting into a top MBA can definitely make that happen. And I have seen it happen in the past. So, if its your dream go for it. But when you present your story to the admissions committee, you might try and think of something that might fit in more closely with the experience you have already gained, so somehow experience where you could use your vast journalism/media experience.

Anyhow, whether you go for an MSF or MBA you will likely find yourself at “entry level” jobs in finance, for the simple reason that you don't have the experience required to do more complex jobs. You might get a much better and higher paid entry level job than say someone coming from undergrad! But still, nobody’s gonna start you off as a manager of a finance team, when you haven’t done the work yourself first.

Anyhow the most important thing to keep in mind is that yes, either of these degrees can help you make the change you want. But try and keep things real by applying to schools with strengths in finance, or near good finance locations (London, NYC). It will make things easier for you to make this change.
