issue9:In any field of endeavor, it is (impossible) to make a significant contribution without first being strongly influenced by past achievements within that field.
In the title statement, the speaker claims that it’s impossible to make a contribution without firstly being strongly influenced by past achievements in any field. Admittedly, the predecessors’ contributions may have a great influence in producing the later success in some fields. However, could this assertion always be right in any fields? In my point of view, the final (judgment) should (depend) on a case-by-case analysis.
To begin with, it is to some extent reasonable to say that all the later achievements are under the influence of the former ones. Firstly, in some field such as the science, the later contributions are based on the past theories and knowledge. The later scientists should first understand the concepts (rose) by the predecessors, then can create their own. In such a process, it’s inevitable to be influenced by the former scientists. For instance, Newton, one of the famous physicists in human history, has once said “If I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants.” In this word, Newton attributed his excellent contributions to the predecessors’ influence. Moreover, the hypothesis published by the predecessors can usually predict the later achievements in the field. One of the typical examples is the Goldbach’s conjecture. In the way to prove this conjecture, a number of mathematicians included Chinese mathematician Chen Jingrui have made a great contributions.
However, the speaker omits that the experience from the predecessors can also prohibit the later development. For example, the Aristotle’s theory of falling objects has been recognized as the fact. It’s until hundred years later that Galileo’s experiments verify the failure of Aristotle. In other words, the Aristotle’s false conjecture thwarts the development of mechanics for a long time. What’s more, in some cases, the later contribution has nothing to do with the past achievements. One of this cases is that Colombo discovered the American continents. Can you deny this is not a significance contribution in history? In fact, the Colombo’ contribution should be attributed to the his good luck.
Actually, the speaker has not considered many special fields which we called “new field”. In these “new field”, the past achievements don’t exist since it’s nearly undeveloped. If one can make a contribution in these field, it’s ridiculous to say that he is influenced by the inexistent past achievements. It’s the imagination rather than any influence of the past achievements result in these contributions.
In sum, from what has been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that it’s impossible to make a contribution without firstly being strongly influenced by past achievements in part fields.
上面有些单词错误标出来了,在括号里面,整体来说还是不错的, |
