Thank you for your interest in the Master of Science in Financial Mathematics program. As you may know, we are proud to have full‐ ime campuses both in Chicago and in Singapore. Unfortunately, we will not be able to offer you Chicago‐campus admission for the academic year 2011‐ 2012. Due to the large number of well‐qualified applicants and the fact that we can only accept a very limited number of students, we had to make some difficult choices. On the other hand, our Singapore campus still has spaces open. Both locations offer the same core courses, taught by the same distinguished instructors. In both locations, our graduates receive degrees from the University of Chicago, as recognized by diplomas which do not state the campus location. Moreover, some Singapore‐campus students have the option to spend one quarter, either winter or spring of 2013, in Chicago campus, if and when spaces open up. If you would like your application to be considered for Singapore‐campus admission, please reply to msfmsingapore@lists.uchicago.edu by May 22, 2012. Any questions you may have about our Singapore location are also welcome at that email address. In any case, we wish you the best in your future academic and professional pursuits.
How much percent of classes would be provided by video clips? How often will the students meet professors face to face?
Faculty members are in Singapore typically every few weeks. We endeavor to have faculty members visit at least once during the quarter if they are teaching a course taken in Singapore. In the past, there has been a faculty member in Singapore about 50% of the time per quarter (for example this was about 60% last Fall). When faculty members are teaching out of Chicago, Singapore students "Live video conference" in (vice versa for students in Chicago when faculty members are in Singapore).
How many students are there in the class and what are their backgrounds?
There have been about 30 students enrolled per year. This could grow in the future. They come from a diversity of backgrounds (many from engineering or finance backgrounds). All students have strong academic backgrounds.
How's the placement after graduation? What kind of employment service would the school provide?
The employment rate has been 100% or close to 100% within 6 months of graduation. Students do receive offers prior to graduation but we only track employment statistics within 6 months after graduation. We have a Career Development Office in Singapore staffed by two full-time professionals.
Would it be possible for students at Singapore Campus to exchange to campus at Chicago?
Students at the Singapore campus are allowed to go on exchange for one quarter in Chicago (subject to logistical and immigration constraints).
Please let us know if you wish to be considered for the Singapore campus. If so, a decision will be made by early June.
