Some people believe that in order to be effective, political leaders must yield to public opinion and abandon principle for the sake of compromise. Others believe that the most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented.
我写的: As to whether political leader should yield to public opinions or stick on his or her own principles and objectives, some people claim that yielding to the mass public is the most effective way. Although this allegation seems reasonable at first glance, I cannot agree with it with second thought. In my point of view, it is crucial for a political leader to hold his or her own principles when using his or her power and keep the continuity of government's policies. First of all, it is not practical to yield to public because the public opinions differ from each other at most of the times. That is because different social groups have different requires in politics and their opinions are always hard to reach an compromising, which makes it impossible for people in authorities to decide yield to which group. Thus, the political leader should have his or her principles and value systems to make decisions and make sure to maximize the benefits of the whole society, though following sacrifices sometimes. Take the Iraq War for example, some nationalists think starting the war is justice and necessary to protect the United States, while, on the other hand, the opponents of the war assert that the war bring harm to not only the people in Iraq, but also the Americans. Under the conditions that each side of the people have a large number of people, the political leader are ought to determine by his or her own principles. Provide that the political leader yield to the public simple in order to gain the support of people, the policies executed by government are not continuous enough, which might lead to disasters the government cannot afford to pay. Actually, the public opinions are sometimes not thoughtful enough because the normal people are very likely to be effected by emotions, which is just the thing that policy maker should avoid when making a decision. If the Iron lady--Mrs. Thatcher was a political leader who is easy bent, she won't be the Prime Minister that leaded the UK out of the depression of economy. When she declared that the labor union must be reformed and run the policies to support the privatization of public service, she was the woman people hated most at that time, however, people praise for her courage, version and determination today. As to the worries about the situation that a political leader's policy is against most of the people's benefits, there is no need to be anxious because of the comprehensive voting system, which means people will vote on feet and do not support this political leader any longer. From the other prospect, if a political leader carries out policies he or she is not really believed in, the process will not be fluent and results might be disappointed. From all the discussions above, I can safely arrive at the conclusion that holding an opinion based on one's own value system is necessary for a political leader.
