(66)The following appeared in a memo from theowner of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States. For many years all the stores in our chainhave stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, all of the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were domesticcheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of theWorld magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses amongits subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stockingmany of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domesticcheeses. Write a response in which you discuss whatquestions would need to be answered in order to decide whether therecommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain howthe answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation. In this memo, the writer concluded that thebest way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stockingmany of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domesticcheeses. To bolster the conclusion , several reasons are listed out . Whenunder deeper deliberation, the argument is unconvincing and the reasons arepresented as follow . To begin with , the writer pointed out thatall of the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were domestic cheddarcheeses from Wisconsin last year .However ,can the newest store represent allthe stores? Maybe the other stores' best-selling cheeses were not from Wisconsinbut from foreign countries or places other than Wisconsin. What's more, it islikely that the new store was opened in Wisconsin ,where people prefer cheesesfrom local cites. What about other stores opened in other states such as NewYork and Iowa? Perhaps people there prefer cheeses from Asia and Europe. Andyet ,maybe the newest took some measures that benefits the sales of the cheesesfrom Wisconsin, such as discount. To strengthen to argument , the writer shouldalso take much more factors into account . Secondly , the writer presented a recentsurvey by Cheeses of the World magazine, which show an increasing preferencefor domestic cheeses among its subscribers .However ,whether the survey isreliable and representative is questionable . How many are its subscribers? Areall the subscribers present their real thought ? Regardless of the reliabilityof the survey , is it valuable for the company ?How many of the subscribers areconsumers of the company ? Good chance is that few of them buy cheeses fromthese stores . Therefore , the survey should not be the evidence applied tosupport the conclusion . Finally , the writer said that ,since ourcompany can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improveprofits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varietiesof imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. How can wepredict the result of the policy? It seems that by limiting inventory cancontribute to the reduction of the expenses. However, if lots of the consumersof these stores prefer imported cheese ,this may result in the decline in therevenue of these stores, and then the profits decrease . What's more ,maybethere exists other ways to improve profits .For example ,the stores canencourage the seller by offering a high reward according to their performance . In sum , the writer fail to demonstrate theargument effective .To better strengthen the argument ,some important questionsdeserved to be answered . If these can be answered well, the recommendation canbe more effective. |
