Thelecture refutes the theory in the reading that humans and animals are veryaltruistic with new scientific findings. Firstof all, meercats who stand guard are not necessarily making a sacrifice, assuggested in the reading. In fact, newfindings have shown that 1) meercats eat before they stand guard; 2) they standguard near a burrow so they can escape immediately, and the panicky action ofthe other meercats caused by the alarm call may distract the predator, makingit easier for the sentinel to escape. These two findings oppose the reading which states that meercats arealtruistic animals because they stand guard on an empty stomach and do so atthe risk of being captured by the predator, because loners are easier to catchthan a group of meercats. This is oneplace where practice contradicts theory. Also, humans who donate their organs may do so partially out of selfishconsiderations. The professor says thata kidney donor, for example, get appreciation from society and the receiver, and a greater sense of self-worth - two non-material types of wealth that somepeople consider very important. Thus, wecannot say humans always do these altruistic things - giving away food, donating organs, etc. - for purely altruistic reasons. This is another place where practice opposestheory. Inconclusion, the professor gives us examples of new findings to make us thinktwice about the theory that humans and animals are altruistic.
independent 题目:有些人认为年轻人应该早日独立,其他人反对。 Whilesome young adults choose to be independent as soon as possible, others wouldrather stay with their families longer. As far as I am concerned, the former is better. Firstof all, independence from one's family means maturity and freedom. One essential aspect of independence isfinancial independence, which I think is very important to a young adult, whohas been living under his parents' wings and has never had to worry aboutmoney. Financial independence bringsalong independence in other areas, both psychologically and physically. For example, when I realized that I didn'tneed any more financial support from my parents for my college educationbecause I had been earning enough money from part-time jobs, internships, andscholarships, I got an incredible feeling of empowerment. Financial independence has brought me moreconfidence and sense of responsibility, which come with maturity and freedom tomake my own decisions. I now feel that Ican make more choices on my own, and I also need to be more responsible forthese choices. In addition, soon I won'thave to live with my parents anymore because I will be able afford my ownapartment. This kind of independencehelps a young adult to mature. What'smore, independence is one of the criteria of society of success. Think about all the successful people inhistory, was any of them not independent? Independence shows others that you are strong and capable, while livingwith one's parents often gives the impression that you are weak and lazy. Obviously, people have more respect for thestrong and capable. And when peoplerespect someone, they are more likely to make friends or do business withhim. Thus, being independent gives one achance to become successful. Somemay argue that becoming independent at a young age is hard both for the kid andfor the parents. I must say that in theeyes of parents, their kid is never ready to "face the danger ofsociety". And for a kid, it isalways easier to stay at a warm shelter with the love of his parents. However, one must grow up, and the sooner onedecides to do so, the sooner he will learn how to survive in a society. Inconclusion, I personally believe that it is better for a young adult to beindependent as soon as they can. |
