To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.
In my view, deeper and comprehensive studies of characteristics of a society, not only of the cities but also of the rural areas, should be made to have all-sided insight into a society.
Admittedly, major cities, widely regarded as the symbol of the society and the nation, reveal the full view of the nationwide outlook and customs of its citizens to a large degree. The high buildings and the busy traffic indicates, more or less, some of the characteristics of the cities' rapid developing achievement. Furthermore, as the political and economic centers, major cities are so attractive and are likely populous. A mount of educated people assimilate into the major cities, holding their clear universal values and even the pursuit for chasing their dreams and perfection. In study of characteristic of the working passions, it could be more effective and representative to delve among the urban people.
In fact, however, it is one-sided to study the major cities only. To exhibit the best aspect of the nation, governments pay a lot of budget on designing and developing the cities. As a result, the booming cities, could not represent the conditions of other areas, but the blueprint of the dreaming future instead. So it is entirely possible, and even likely to overestimate and overbeautify the characteristics of the society if only the cities are surveyed. For instance, could the circumstances of the New York City and the Washington D.C., be hasty representations of the slums and Indian reservations and plantations? Moreover, Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, favored by the tourists all around the world on the surface, masks the frequently subtle political conflicts in the society.
Besides, the conclusion is too generalized. Areas, apart from the cities, may significantly display the reality. At first, unlike the urban people who grow up in the environment where traditional and original cultures and values have considerably been assimilated by nonnative ones, the rural people keep more to traditional concepts , values and customs, unique to their own society, which are more valuable when studying the society. Particularly, in some nations, the population of rural ones is much larger than that of the urban ones. China, for instance, is an agricultural country with the almost 1 billion of rural population, a larger percentage of total number. Although the booming cities like Beijing, Shanghai and thriving businesses in the major cities show the social conditions to the outside world at present, they are the minority. More comprehensive , realistic and deeper insight into a society would be gained preferably if research and observation among the masses were conducted in the rural areas rather than in the major cities.
In sum, cities and countries respectively embody values and customs of a society. The conclusion is bound to be faulty and unreasonable if we generalize a conclusion without taking distinctive conditions into consideration. To get the credible conclusion, we should consider both of them instead of focusing on the cities only. |
