The greatness of individual can be decided only by those who live after them , not by their contemporaries.
The speaker would prefer to assert that deciding by those who live after the greatest individuals is the best way to judge how great men are. To agree or disagree with it is a matter of balancing between its pros and cons. In my point of view, I generally agree with this assertion. However, in different situations, the men’ achievements can decided by their contemporaries. Thus if we only judge others by both those who live after them, it may erode the fairness to the greatest men.
Admittedly, one reason why I fundamentally agree with the writer is that deciding by those lived after the greatest men is more objective. Let us take Harvey as an example. Harvey, a famous physician, discovered the circulation of blood, which refuting the theories made by Galen. His theory was not accepted by the contemporaries, while it is wellknown all over the world now. Therefore, to some extent, judging by offspring is a better way to evaluate the outcomes of individuals.
Aside from the foregoing assertion, there is another reason to hit this point. Deciding by offspring is not only more objective, but also more meaningful. In the first place, some theories or polities are benefit for offspring. The next generation will know how influence these outcomes play. In the second place, only using in our lives can we know how important these are. To make this point clearly, we can serve as Copernicus as an example to demonstrate this view. Copernicus, a celebrity astronomer all over the world, is famous for his heliocentric theory. His theory is contradictory to the geocentric theory. Now, we actually know how significant impacts on our lives and the following researches. Thus I think this view is realism.
However, they are more men are praised by the contemporaries. Roosevelt is one of them. In realm of political, as a famous president in United States, his "New Deal"- relief, reform, recovery-made America out of Economic Depression. And from now on, he was looked at as a hero in American. Marion Luther King is also respected by contemporaries. He struggled for racism all his life. Thus, some greatest individuals can decided by their contemporaries.
To sum up, there is no easy to identify how to decide a great individual. However, considering the effects of the judgment, the writer overstated the comparative significance of the problem. Personally speaking, it is recommend to analysis this issue through by all the methods. The optimal approach, is balancing its pros and cons by offspring and contemporaries. In other words, there would be benefit for considering all of them evaluation. 字数436 |
