我不知是原题还是前人的抄写有误，实际的approximate vi.  其常见用法是approximate to sth.

approximate vt.接近；使接近（＋to）；大致估计；模拟

                    vi.接近（＋to）

                    a.近似的；大约的

我用的是我认为较权威的美国的“新华字典”longman，其解释如下：

所给出的解释也许不够全面，但表明“approximate to”这个用法是常用的。

longman 里面的确说是~ to sth

不过旁边有个extra examples from newspapers
