There has been a growing concern about whether people should disobey the laws that they think unjust. Some may agree the statement, while othes are against it. As far as I am concerned, I think that the laws should not be labeled as unjust laws and just laws, and every citizen have a responsibility to obey the laws because the laws are authority’s tool to keep society in order and protect majority residents’ interests rather than a tool to project every individual’s interest. Moreover, most people lack of the professional knowledge to know whether the law is just or unjust. Most importantly, just resisting so-called unjust laws do not work out any solutions to problems, but lead Our society into chaos.
First, the law requires equal treatment, regardless of race, religion or any excuse. This means every citizen has the duty to obey the law no matter whether they think the law is just or unjust. According to the theory of Roussean, a great 18th French political philosopher, said, “in a democratic society, the state represents the general will of the citizens and in obeying the laws, citizens are pursing their real interests. Laws act as behavior standard of people’s daily life and necessary to protect most people’s rights and freedom. If people disobey laws just for they think laws unjust, they are more likely to use such ideas as an excuse to sacrifice others’ interests for the sake of their own profits.
Second, it is hard for normal people to exactly judge the justness and unjustness of laws because different people persue different interest. Under such conditions, some laws might be just to some groups of individuals while unjust to other groups of people. Only from their own positions, people are not able form an objective and unbiased oppinion about the laws. For example, in order to protect environment, Governments enacted environmental legislation, which seems unjust to these factories and their workers. By making efforts to reach the laws requirement, these factories should spend a large part of profits to buy advanced equipment to eliminate the concentration of contamination in the waste water. In the short run, the profit will be declined and the salaries of workers will be diminished. However, for the people who live in the nearby area, the laws playing an important role in helping them have a nice environment to live. Therefore, people do not ought to use unjustness of laws as an reason to disobey the laws. Such behavior might result in seriously bad consequence.
Finally, respect for order and regulation is an important quality of civilized human, which helps us more than instinct-driven animals. Resisting so-called unjust laws are not helpful to resolve any problem. Instead, it would lead us back to jungle world. Without laws to guide and restrict people’s daily life behavior, people would do what they want to do. Such is human nature that people are willing to sacrifice other’s interest for the previlige of their own sake. The fact that every one does not respect laws and obey laws means that the interest of one can not be respected and be protected. For instance, imagine that if people regard traffic laws as unjust and do not stop even if face of red lights, what will our traffic system turn into? Obviously, the number of traffic accidents will rise and a great deal number of innocent people will be killed. In the end, we do not own traffic system.
In conclusion, for the preceding reasons, we can safely draw a conclusion that disobeying so-called unjust laws is not an wise choice for any responsible individual because every citizen have responsibility to obey the laws, ordinary people do not have the ability to judge whether the laws are just or unjust, and most importantly, doing so will not benefit anyone but lead to a great chaos. |
