Even with theproposed budget cuts and new taxes and fees, the city's projected deficit forthe next budget year is getting worse: administration officials announced thatthey believe the gap will be $3.7 billion, a billion dollars over what itwas predicted just two months ago.
A. over what it was predicted
B. over the prediction from
C. more thanit was predicted
D. more than they hadpredicted
E. more than they predicted it
正答D

求助NN,这道题我错选了C,答案说C里面it指代不明,但我感觉这个it不就是指代the gap吗?
OG对C的解释里还说“the gap will be more than it was predicted” 应该改成“the gap will be more than it was predicted to be”或者“gap will be more than as predicted”就是对的。

“does it refer to the gap or is it the impersonal it that could be correctly used in a passive-voice phrase such as it was predicted that...? In either case, the underlined phrase is incoherent. ”

"The phrasing than it was predicted is unclear, in part because, as explained above, the import of the pronoun it is unclear. If we take it as referring back to the gap, we still have an inadequate expression of the second element of the comparison. either ' the gap will be more than it was predicted to be' or 'gap will be more than as predicted' would make sense."

嗯嗯,D的they指代我明白,但是gap不可以是“被预测”吗,就像C里面的 it was predicted 这样说?我主要不是很明白og解析为啥说C的it was predicted 错误,但是变成it was predicted to be就是对的了这是一种习惯的说法吗?

就是说C中的it was predicted... It is rainning里面的it),it还可以是指the gap。
如果像OG说的那样改成“the gap will be more than it was predicted to be'或者 'gap will be more than as predicted”就能排除it作为非人称代词的可能性,因此变的没有歧义啦!

It was only after Katharine Graham became publisher of The Washington Post in 1963 that
it moved into the first rank of American newspapers, and it was under her command that
the paper won high praise for its unrelenting reporting of the Watergate scandal.
(A) It was only after Katharine Graham became publisher of The Washington Post in 1963
that it moved into the first rank of American newspapers, and it was under her
command that the paper won high praise
(B) It was only after Katharine Graham's becoming publisher of The Washington Post in
1963 that it moved into the first rank of American newspapers, and under her
command it had won high praise
(C) Katharine Graham became publisher of The Washington Post in 1963, and only after
that did it move into the first rank of American newspapers, having won high praise under her command
(D) Moving into the first rank of American newspapers only after Katharine Graham
became its publisher in 1963, The Washington Post, winning high praise under her
command
(E) Moving into the first rank of American newspapers only after Katharine Graham's
becoming its publisher in 1963, The Washington Post won high praise under her
command

https://gmatclub.com/forum/even-with-the-proposed-budget-cuts-and-new-taxes-and-fees-the-city-s-321754.html
3.7 is 1 more than 2.7
然后2.7≠it was predicted, 即无法说the gap is predicted $2.7
但2.7=it was predicted to be,可以说the gap is predicated to be $2.7

或者就直接记住gap will be more than it was predicated是不好的讲法就行了。。。

我想请问一下D中they为什么指代的是administration officials而不是a billion dollars呀?
