请问OG12 -067关于条件句时态的问题

我觉得这个题里面因为assume的出现，所以要用下虚拟语气。那assumed是一般过去式，那么对过去的虚拟语气不应该是would have done吗？为什么选项里面涉及的都只是对现在虚拟，用的是would do 啊？？

不是assume一出现就必须用虚拟语气，要根据意思决定。这里不需要用虚拟语气，选项中也不是现在虚拟，而是条件句时态一致的要求，if+n.+过去式，then 主语+would+动词原形；同理，如果条件句从句是一般现在时，主句就用一般将来时。另外，如果assume引导宾语从句使用虚拟语气，从句为should+动词原形，should可以省略，这种句型中的虚拟语气形式不受主句动词时态的影响，也就是说，即使是assumed,后面也是should do。建议楼主看有关虚拟语气在不同情况下的使用，否则容易混淆。

Affording strategic proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar,Morocco was also of interest to the French throughout the first half of the twentieth century because they assumed that if they did not hold it, their grip onAlgeria was always insecure.

(A) if they did not hold it, their grip on Algeria was always insecure
(B) without it their grip on Algeria would never be secure
(C) their grip on Algeria was not ever secure if they did not hold it
(D) without that, they could never be secure about their grip on Algeria
(E) never would their grip on Algeria be secure if they did not hold it
1.从意思上来体会这个assume，THEY 假定的内容本来就是发生可能较小的情况啊，那这不正是满足了条件句中使用虚拟语气的情况么？
2。在虚拟语气的情况下，条件句的主从句应该是可以时态不一致的吧？

摩洛哥的控制对法国人的意义还是往将来考虑的。
assume。。。would。。。是恰当的，AC的一般过去时，可排除；
D中they...be secure不这么用；
E中的倒装结构很强烈，if后面比较长，其中的it显得指代不清，是阿尔及利亚，还是摩洛哥？

如果说到虚拟语气的详细用法，我也不甚了了。
