Dear mathematics department faculty member,

I am writing to ask your assistance in identifying math majors who might be in
terested in applying their talents to the study of finance. Rice University i
s launching its first PhD program in finance, accepting applications now for m
atriculation in Fall 2010. Our goal is to place students as assistant profess
ors of finance at top research universities (the starting salaries for such po
sitions are in excess of $200,000). Because our program is new, we are offeri
ng a highly competitive stipend to students ($35,000 per year) in addition to
the usual waiver of all tuition fees. An undergraduate math major, especially
when combined with some economics, is excellent preparation for the study of
finance. We would be grateful if you would advise any especially talented stu
dents of this opportunity. The application deadline is January 15.

In case you are unaware, Rice is a small school (5,000 students of which 40% a
re graduate students) consistently ranked among the top 20 U.S. universities f
or undergraduate education. It has a beautiful campus in a pastoral setting o
nly minutes from downtown Houston, which is the 4th largest city in the U.S.

Well, Kerry Back himself is pretty famous in asset pricing.

I don't know much about Rice's program, but after reading thru the web, I think the overall quality of the program may be around 30-50.
