我觉得E更好,选项C中on earth作为副词修饰整个主句,修饰范围太广.

选项E,on earth修饰indications修饰明确

on earth  在地球上

怎么会有修饰范围的问题呢？

举个例子吧:

Quickly, he picked up the wallet and returned it to me

He picked up the wallet quickly and returned it to me

其中第一个句子quickly修饰整个句子,既可以修饰picked up又可以修饰returned

而第二个句子quickly只能修饰picked up

因此存在一个副词修饰范围的问题

楼上非常有理。这道题根本不是其它帖子所说的指代啊什么的错误，关键是on earth的位置：是在地球上的最sure的indication，而不是在地球上，树的生长blabla。。。。on earth 放前面和句子中间区别开来,那就只有DE，D没有谓语动词，所以是E

同意楼上的。

加上一点：未划线部分的as seen in the rings visible in the cross sections of their trunks.的比较对象是the rate at which trees grow，比较的对象离得越近越好。
