问题是the midge是主语，refers是谓语。可是主谓之间能有逗号么？

The midge 和a term applied to any of several species of small flies应该是主语同位语，如果你在前半句中用王海波的方法，把所有的修饰成分去掉的话，只剩下孤立名词，这时马上就应该想到是主语同位语了。
