People often give the following advice: "Be yourself. Follow your instincts and behave in a way that feels natural."
The saying is rather prevailing these days. For example, when one face the dilemma of a either-or choice, he/she can always hear people say, be yourself. But does it really help to be oneself? The answer may vary from case to case.
To determine whether "be yourself" is really beneficial to people, we must first know what people exactly wants. Unfortunately, all to often human instinct are evil,vicious and greedy. The drug traffickers want to sell as much as heroin as possible. The criminals want to commit prison break without any serious punishment. The terrorists want to smash down the White House. This is what their most combatitive and aggressive instincts suggest them to do. But , are these behaviour benificial to themselves or the society. The answer is definitely no.
Maybe some would argue that the examples I list above is too extreme. But even to ordinary people, blindly following the instincts is not always a good practice because as a human being, our instincts can feature the positive side as well as negative side. That is why people use ration and morality to determine possible response to a given situation. It is the knowledge that one should be responsible for his action supress the manifestation of negative instincts.
Although most people may have the memory when "be yourself" help them out of hardship or embarrassment. But whether it is their instinct that helps remains questionable. Because no matter aware or not, we are constantly correlating a current situation with the past experience and applying our interpretation of personal history. Therefore, it is quite possiblethat our experience rather than instinct works.
In conclusion, despite the aura of exhibiting one's true self in "be yourself" butressed by some media. I would suggest that people should never surrender themselves to the most primitive instincts for the reason I mentioned above.
