36. In 1527 King Henry VIII sought to have his marriage to Queen Catherine annulled so as to marry Anne Boleyn.

My question: "to do" can be used to mean purpose. In this sentence, why "to" has to be changed to "in order to", if not considering the wordy problem caused by "be married to"?
