I really want to share my experience, and hope some expert give me some advice.
I took GMAT last year, and got 650 (m48, V29). I know it's not a high score at all. But I am confident about my working experience. Later on, I got a half scholarship from Simon, but I rejected the offer. I believe I can get a big offer from a big name school this year.
I retook GMAT yesterday, I only got 580(m48, V20), can you believe that? I cannot. I don't think my English ability is going down, although my native language is not English. I am super sad and frustrated.
it's a tough situation, except you can take the 3rd GMAT soon and get a decent score, however, you may worry that you will miss your 1st round application.
No matter what, it's difficult to explain why you get 580 this year to the admission officers.
The good thing for you is that you had written the essays last year, thus it might comparatively take less time this year to do so.
agree that even native speaker might achieve low score. Guess you are not frustrated by the fee but by the unexpected failure. Are you very busy? If yes, then don't blame yourself because it is just an exam. Like any exam, more time spent on practicing, better outcome. If no, then try again after good preparation.
Frankly speaking, after I was frustrated by the score, I am not very confident to say I will get a better score next time. It's so hard for me. What if I get another 580? Sounds like I am consistant on this level.
BTW, do you think GMAT changed the question direction a bit?
If you have an extremely strong background and brilliant at writing essays, then 650 can still get you into your dream schools. Otherwise, highly suggest you to retake GMAT. A 700+ score will not only make you more competitive among the overwhelming number of applicants for this upcoming school year, but also make a pretty good essay material.
