I would like to share a true story...
A student friend of mine at JHU had acute abdominal pain 2 weeks after arriving from Taiwan. She waited for 3 days before seeing a doctor because she is worried about the cost of the hospital visit without health insurance. The student clinic did some simple tests and told her she had minor problem with her ovary, nothing to worry about, and sent her home with some pain medicine. The pain got worse and she asked me to take her to the ER. We waited for 6 hours in a busy ER before seeing a doctor, and another 12 hours for test results before the doctor told her that all her tests were normal and that her problem is not an emergency. At that time, I decided to call a Taiwanese friend of mine who is a doctor at Johns Hopkins to ask if he can communicate with the ER physician to find out more information. Under the Taiwanese doctor's recommendation, the ER doctor decided to order one more test and found out that she had appendicitis! Because of the delay in diagnosis, her appendix was so big that it was about to burst. My friend underwent emergency surgery and luckily survived without much complication. The Taiwanese doctor saved my friend's life.
Just like article suggested, all international students should purchase health insurance. More importantly, in case of a medical emergency, it may be life-saving if you have an advocate who is medically knowledgeable on your side.
