Task 1
The reading passage explains the concept of jet streams and discribes its features and the listening passage gives an exaple of how they can influence air travel.

According to the reading passage, the jet stream--an irregular band of wind--takes place in the area that is about 20,000 feet from the earth's surface. The jet streams typically have a speed of more than 57 miles per hour, with a probable average central speed of 190 miles per hour. Jet streams occur due to contrast of between tempratures of the atomosphere and that of the earth. And the strength of the jet stream winds is positively affected by the greatness of the contrast in the temprature.

Two ject streams are identified between the equator and the North Pole, one of which is used by the professor in the listening passage to illustrate the influence the jet streams can have on air travel. The professor explains that the time it takes to fly from LA to NY would be about one hour shorter than that of the same route from NY to LA, just because the direction of the jet stream wind the plane meet. By fly against the wind in the returning route, the plane will spend more time and energy to conteract the wind.

Task 2
While modern people strive to earn as much money as possible, there are still some who are content with just making a living of comfort. Though both show some understanding of the needs of life, these perspectives just have distinctive philosophies of life.

The first viewpoint, which is popular among most people in today's world, is somewhat more obvious with regard to the goals of life. It addresses the basic needs of people in attaining material conforts. However, a number of people are lost in their pursue of this, remembering only the money while leaving behind the original purpose what they want to make money for. With the ever quiker pace of living, heavier workload and less time for relax, their goal becomes ever narrower and begins to focus on money alone.

The latter perspective, by contrast, deals with the genuine needs of human beings, both physical and phycological, so it is more healthier and can keep people right on track of their journey in life. Being satisfied with the comfortable living they can earn, they spend much of their attention on what life can offer by relaxing, having fun, spending time with friends and family. They can develop their hobbies and channel their emotions in more constructive ways that can enhance their understanding of what life is and how to live it. It may be true that sometimes they have to work very hard to support theirselves and their families, but in doing it, they bear the basic belief in heart that their life's goal is to live a good life so they will not go astray to pursue pure material conforts.

I appreciate and adopt the second point of view towards life for it demonstrate the true wisdom of life. What we can have are more than that money can provide. We need time to do what we like, and we need still more time to enjoy what life has to offer. Without this in mind, we can be lost in an attempt to make more money than ever, while in the meantime, without noticing that we are deprived the previleges to enjoy life.
