The government provides insurance for individuals’ bank deposits, but requires the banks to pay the premiums for the insurance. Since it is depositors who primarily benefit from the security this insurance provides, the government should take steps to ensure that depositors who want this security bear the cost of it and thus should make depositors pay the premiums for insuring their own accounts.

6.     Which of the following is assumed by the argument?

(A) Banks are not insured by the government against default on the loans the banks make.

(B) Private insurance companies do not have the resources to provide banks or individual with deposit insurance.

(C) Banks do not always cover the cost of the deposit-insurance premiums by paying depositors lower interest rates on insured deposits than the banks would on uninsured deposits.

(D) The government limits the insurance protection it provides by insuring accounts up to a certain legally defined amount only.C

(E) The government does not allow banks to offer some kinds of accounts in which deposits are not insured.

为什么C呢?

文章说获利的人应该负担成本,所以存款者应该要负担成本,这样的话,assumption不是应该说明存款者确实获利,或者银行不获利吗?我觉得A才对呀~

请指教~~

The government provides insurance for individuals’ bank deposits, but requires the banks to pay the premiums for the insurance. Since it is depositors who primarily benefit from

the security this insurance provides, the government should take steps to ensure that

depositors who want this security bear the cost of it and thus should make depositors pay the premiums for insuring their own accounts.

This is an assumption type of question. The technique is negation.

Conclusion of this argument is: depositors should pay the premiums for insuring their own accounts.

Which of the following is assumed by the argument?

(A) Banks are not insured by the government against default on the loans the banks make.

Negate: Banks are insured by the government against default on the loans the banks make.

This had nothing to do with our conclusion. It’s out of scope.

(C) Banks do not always cover the cost of the deposit-insurance premiums by paying

depositors lower interest rates on insured deposits than the banks would on uninsured deposits.

Negate: Banks always cover the cost of the deposit-insurance premiums by paying

depositors lower interest rates on insured deposits than the banks would on uninsured deposits.

This weaken the conclusion that depositors should pay the premiums for insuring their own accounts because bank pay lower interest to depositor.

Not + weaken, this is the assumption of this argument.

Banks can cover the premimum of deposit insurance for customers who choose to do so. Where does the money come from? Part of customers' interest!

Say the premimum is $50. Your total interest out of your deposit would be $100.

If you choose not to have the bank pay for the premimum of deposit insurance, the bank will offer  you a higher interest rate for your deposit. You eventually end up with $100 of interest.

If you choose to have the bank pay for the premimum of deposit insurance ($50), the bank will offer you a lower insterest rate so that you end up with $50 of interest.

Bankers are not dummies. They don't like to lose money.
