小人愚笨～～看完了从前关于这题的讨论，还是不明白，为什么ＯＧ解释里说“Ｂ项what取代了that，错”？

前人讨论观点说：
B) in the economy to avoid the recession, what many feared earlier in the year, rather to come 用WHAT来指代RECESSION一个词是不是有问题？！所以选B肯定不成立

我的理解是：what不光是指代recession这一个词，而是the recession that；并且之前还用了逗号分隔。怎么看都不明白错在哪里啊？

construction is problematic in this sentence, because, in
general, 'what' conveys a sense of exclusivity / uniqueness. 'what they had not
considered possible' implies that there is only one thing satisfying that
description, in contrast to 'something...' which admits the possibility of many
other such things.

如果这样的话，B项中what引导的从句能不能视为recession的同位语呢？

In answer A, there are two attributive clauses . Two "that" are in consist with the two clauses. 

The first clause is "that ... economy ... avoid ... recession ...", it modifies "confidence". "Recession" is the object of the clause.

The second clause  is "that ... many ... feared ...", it modifies "recession".

Because "recession" is modifed by the second clause and also is the object of the first attributive clause, so OG explains two clauses "one of them is contained within another".

 what many feared earlier in the year, 许多人在年初害怕的事, 人们可以害怕很多东西: danger, unemployment etc. recession 只是其中的一种.

what 做 recession 的同位语, 概念太大, 无法很好的解释recession.
