一个弱弱的问题

OG72答案是“more than doubled”,我一直理解不了，这种结构好象不是比较，但用more 修饰动词似乎很难理解啊。

Here is the question:
The number of undergraduate degrees in engineering awarded by colleges and universities in the United States increased by （more than twice） from 1978 to 1985.
(A)    increased by more than twice
(B)    increased more than two times
(C)    more than doubled
(D)    was more than doubled
(E)          had more than doubled

Answer is C
我想应该理解成 more than doubled number......难道省略了？
探讨中......

more than doubled有点象上面句子中的more than (merely) summarize
我觉得在语法功能上把这里的more than理解为副词比较合适。
请高手指正啊！

'more than' together　有多过，大过　的意思。

谢谢大家的援手，我知道在句中是修饰的关系，可more than在做比较时, 确实不理解怎么可以修饰动词字典中给定的比较，也是后面跟adj/adv/n

我想这里的more than表达的虽然是比较的含义，但不是比较结构。
