hmm..好问题，没注意到。查了查书，薄冰语法上说：adj最高级+of 名词（泛指） = very +  adj + 名词，个人觉得有特别强调的意思。我说作者竟敢断言此人乃是世上最bland and circumspect的人，原来只是very而已。

this most bland and circumspect of men 可翻译成 “这个巨乏味谨慎的老兄” 。。看来这位老兄连上不上厕所都得看有没有a message received at séances, and a sign from heaven，就象被MM用手机控制的兄弟们一样(These brothers are the best of boyfriends..hehe)。

the(或者其它限定词，如本题中的this) + 形容词最高级 + (单数名词 － 通常省略)  + of + 复数名词

举个简单的例子可能更好理解：

the most elaborate (bird nest) of all bird nests

You are the smartest (boy) of all the boys in your class

用was是因为形容词后面省略了单数名词。
