now i get some time. I have some friends in VC industry. So I know sth about this industry.
First of all, most VCers are really elite. If you check VC companies' websites, you will find most of those partners have very strong education background. They are either PhD or MBA from top tier schools.
To be a good VCer, you must have strong background in a specific industry such as biotech, IT, etc etc. Strong industry background is necessary for u to evaluate potential investment opportunities.
Common career paths are:
1. Investment banking first then VC. Most bankers did lots of M&A, IPO projects before they join VC companies
2. Startup a company first then VC. Example, Shen Nanpeng
3. Technical guru, PhD in CS, EE ......
4. Strong connection in government, industry ... example: Powell
