“ Discuss an ethical dilemma that you experienced firsthand. How did you manage and resolve the situation?

This topic provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to make difficult choices in situations where your values are at odds with your obligations. Your essay should show how you think about gray areas in life where there is no clear right or wrong, how you approach issues of morality, and what your guiding principles are.

As the following examples demonstrate, ethical dilemmas can come in many forms and contexts. Some can be as simple as having to choose between telling the truth and lying, while others may have to do with conflicts between individual values and common practice in society. They can appear in the workplace and significantly impact people’s careers or in the context of familial obligations where relationships are at stake. Regardless of the circumstances, however, they all are profound and serve as a test.

Making your essay successful requires more than just relating an anecdote. You must clarify what made a given situation an ethical dilemma and what made your decision so difficult. Why was it a test for you? Be sure to explain your thought process and the role of your personal ethics and beliefs. And do not shy away from being very honest and very personal. The point here is to share something fundamental about yourself, and you will not accomplish this without opening up your heat a little.
